Sun May 11 09:09:25 UTC 2025: ## PMK Holds Major Youth Conference Amidst Shifting Political Landscape

**Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu, May 11, 2025** – The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), a Tamil Nadu-based political party, is holding its Chithirai Pournami Vanniyar Youth Conference today in Mamallapuram. This marks the first such conference in 12 years and is being seen as a crucial event for the party as it navigates a changing political landscape ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Thousands of Vanniyar youth are expected to attend the gathering, which is taking place amidst heightened security. The event showcases the party’s attempt to demonstrate its continued strength within the community, particularly after a period of fluctuating political fortunes.

The PMK, once a significant player in Tamil Nadu politics, holding 18 assembly seats in 2006, has seen its influence wane in recent years. Its aggressive caste-based politics, particularly its stance on inter-caste marriages, led to controversy and violence in the past. The party’s subsequent attempts to form alliances and contest elections independently have yielded limited success.

While the PMK currently holds 5 MLA seats and has no representation in the Lok Sabha, the party is aiming for a resurgence. Party president Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss has attempted to shift the party’s strategy, de-emphasizing anti-Dalit rhetoric and advocating for greater representation for all backward and scheduled caste communities. This conference serves as a platform for the party to showcase this renewed approach and consolidate its base among the Vanniyar community. The success of the conference in fostering unity and projecting a positive image will be key to the PMK’s future prospects.
