Sun May 11 06:20:00 UTC 2025: **Lucknow Hosts Inauguration of BrahMos Supersonic Missile Production Unit**
LUCKNOW, INDIA – Defense Minister Rajnath Singh today virtually inaugurated a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile production unit in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, as part of the state’s defense industrial corridor. The event was attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The new unit, built on 200 acres of land provided by the state government, is designed to produce 80-100 missiles annually. This facility, completed in three and a half years at a cost of ₹300 crore, will manufacture BrahMos missiles with a range of 290-400 kilometers and a maximum speed of Mach 2.8. These missiles, a joint venture between India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia, are capable of being launched from land, sea, or air and utilize a ‘fire and forget’ guidance system.
CM Adityanath emphasized the importance of this facility in countering terrorism, stating that terrorism must be crushed decisively. He referenced Operation Sundar as an example of India’s capabilities. He also highlighted the upcoming production of 100-150 next-generation BrahMos missiles annually, each with an extended range of over 300 kilometers and reduced weight (1,290 kg compared to the current 2,900 kg). This will allow aircraft like the Sukhoi to carry three next-generation missiles instead of just one.
In addition to the missile production unit, the inauguration also included the launch of a titanium and super alloys material plant (Strategic Material Technology Complex) and the foundation stone laying ceremony for a defense testing infrastructure system (DTIS). The Uttar Pradesh defense industrial corridor, with nodes in Lucknow, Kanpur, Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, and Chitrakoot, aims to attract significant investment in the defense sector. The project was announced during the 2018 Global Investors Summit and its foundation stone laid in 2021.
