Sat May 10 01:50:00 UTC 2025: ## India Withholds X’s Global Affairs Account Following Request to Block 8,000 Accounts

**NEW DELHI** – The Indian government has withheld access to the X (formerly Twitter) account @GlobalAffairs, a day after the Elon Musk-owned platform revealed it had been ordered to block nearly 8,000 accounts within the country. The account now displays a message stating it has been withheld in India “in response to a legal demand.”

This action follows escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, sparked by India’s “Operation Sindoor” earlier this week. X’s statement Thursday indicated that the government’s request included blocking accounts belonging to international news organizations and prominent users, threatening significant fines and imprisonment for non-compliance.

While X expressed concerns about the lack of transparency surrounding the government’s executive orders, citing the importance of public disclosure for accountability, the company confirmed its compliance to maintain platform accessibility in India. The platform emphasized the importance of keeping X accessible for Indian users to access information.

The move comes amidst a backdrop of increased military activity. Pakistan launched multiple drone attacks targeting 15 border cities across Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab overnight, all of which were reportedly thwarted by Indian armed forces. The situation remains tense, with Chandigarh and Patiala placed on high alert.
