Fri May 09 21:32:52 UTC 2025: **UN Committee Accuses Israel of “Ethnic Cleansing” and Warns of “Another Nakba”**
AMMAN – A United Nations special committee has issued a stark warning, accusing Israel of “ethnic cleansing” and potentially instigating a second “Nakba” – a mass expulsion of Palestinians – following Israel’s plan to displace hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from northern Gaza.
In a report released Friday, concluding its annual mission to Amman, the committee detailed widespread human rights abuses, including torture, sexual violence, and the systematic confiscation of Palestinian land to facilitate colonial expansion. The committee described Israel’s actions as driven by a “wider colonial expansion” and characterized the ongoing blockade of Gaza, which prevents food aid from reaching the starving population, as a “sick reality.”
The report specifically condemns Israel’s plan to expel hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from northern Gaza into six designated encampments, highlighting the devastating psychological impact on Palestinians who fear a repeat of the 1948 Nakba, when hundreds of thousands were displaced during the creation of Israel. The committee stated that “security operations are used as a smokescreen for rapid land grabbing, mass displacement, dispossession, demolitions, forced evictions and ethnic cleansing.”
The committee’s findings are based on testimonies documenting the systematic use of torture and other forms of cruel treatment by Israeli forces, describing the methods as a deliberate attempt to instill fear and humiliation. The ongoing blockade of Gaza, preventing the delivery of desperately needed food despite its proximity to supply routes, further underscores the severity of the situation.
The UN Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories, established in 1968, concluded that Israel’s prioritization of colonial expansion, coupled with its human rights violations, represents a grave threat to the Palestinian population and risks another catastrophic displacement.
