Thu May 08 12:09:11 UTC 2025: ## Russia’s 72-Hour Ceasefire Met With Skepticism and Renewed Attacks

**Kyiv, Ukraine – May 8, 2025** – A 72-hour ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin to coincide with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations was marred by continued attacks on both sides, casting doubt on its sincerity. While Russia claimed the ceasefire was in effect, Ukrainian officials reported numerous violations, including airstrikes that killed at least one civilian and artillery assaults along the front line.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha accused Russia of violating the ceasefire 734 times in the first 12 hours, calling it a “farce.” He stated that Russia launched 63 assault operations, with 23 ongoing at midday. Ukraine, he said, is responding and sharing information with the U.S. and EU. President Zelenskyy similarly dismissed the ceasefire as “manipulation” designed to provide Putin with a quiet backdrop for his Victory Day parade.

Despite the ongoing attacks, large-scale missile and drone attacks, common in recent weeks, did not occur after 8:30 p.m. on May 7th, according to Ukraine’s air force. The Kremlin, however, accused Ukraine of attacking Russian positions, claiming its forces would mirror Ukrainian actions.

The ceasefire coincided with a high-profile visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping to Moscow, where he and Putin emphasized their strong bilateral relationship and strategic partnership. Putin called Xi his “main guest” at the Victory Day celebrations. China’s continued support for Russia, including providing crucial resources, remains a significant factor in the ongoing conflict. The visit further highlighted the deepening ties between Russia and China amidst growing tensions with the West.
