**KOCHI, Kerala – May 10, 2025** – The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has ordered a probe into the rapid decomposition of a 46-year-old man’s body at Aluva district hospital’s mortuary. The incident, which came to light through media reports, occurred after the cold storage unit malfunctioned on Tuesday.

A preliminary investigation by the district Health wing confirmed the unit was not functioning despite the indicator light suggesting otherwise. Commission Chairperson Alexander Thomas has mandated an official at least of the rank of Revenue Divisional Officer to conduct a thorough investigation within one month. This investigation will include statements from the deceased’s relatives and hospital authorities, a determination of the cause of death, and an expert medical opinion on the accelerated decomposition. The probe will also examine whether police inquest procedures were delayed and confirm the extent of the mortuary unit’s malfunction. The District Police Chief can provide assistance if necessary.
