Fri May 09 15:57:47 UTC 2025: ## Acute Diarrheal Disease Cases Surge in Karnataka
**Bengaluru, May 9, 2025** – A significant rise in acute diarrheal disease (ADD) cases has been reported in Karnataka, raising concerns among health officials. The State Health Department’s Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) reveals a steady increase in cases over the past three years, jumping from 122,192 in 2022 to 139,862 in 2023, and reaching 183,777 in 2024. As of May 8th, 2025, 64,229 cases and two deaths have already been recorded this year.
The increase in ADD outbreaks mirrors this trend, rising from 64 in 2022 to 95 in 2024, with 17 outbreaks affecting 522 people already reported in 2025. Rural areas are disproportionately affected, with Mysuru, Chickballapur, and Haveri districts reporting the highest number of cases.
Contaminated water is cited as the primary cause, particularly in rural areas where the Jal Jeevan Mission aims to provide safe drinking water. Deputy Director of the State Surveillance Unit, Padma M.R., emphasized the need for regular water testing for E. coli, a crucial step often overlooked. She highlighted the importance of implementing H2S and MPN tests during outbreaks and conducting stool culture tests to identify pathogens.
While officials are issuing circulars to ensure proper chlorination levels and implementing preventive measures such as temporary clinics and house-to-house searches, the rising number of cases, particularly with summer approaching, indicates a need for improved water sanitation and hygiene practices across the state. The health department is working with local authorities to address the issue and ensure the supply of safe drinking water, especially in rural communities.
