Sat May 10 02:30:00 UTC 2025: ## India’s Akash Missile System Successfully Defends Against Pakistani Attack
**NEW DELHI** – India successfully repelled a Pakistani missile and drone attack Thursday night, utilizing its indigenously developed Akash surface-to-air missile system as a key component of its air defense network. The system, a crucial part of India’s integrated defense grid alongside systems like the Russian S-400, proved instrumental in neutralizing the incoming threats and protecting cities in western India.
Dr. Prahlada Ramarao, the 78-year-old former DRDO scientist who spearheaded the Akash project over 15 years, expressed immense pride in the system’s performance. He described witnessing the successful interceptions as the “happiest day of his life,” noting that the system exceeded expectations. Dr. Ramarao, handpicked by former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, recalled initial military hesitancy in acquiring the system, which is designed to engage a wide range of aerial threats, including missiles, drones, helicopters, and even advanced fighter jets.
The Akash system, manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited, is a short-range, mobile system capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously. Each launcher carries three “fire and forget” missiles, each weighing 710kg with a 60kg warhead, and capable of reaching altitudes up to 20km. The system features advanced capabilities including real-time data processing, threat evaluation, and electronic countermeasures.
Government sources declared that India had demonstrated its ability not only to defend its airspace but to control it. The successful deployment of the Akash system, along with its export to Armenia in a 6,000 crore rupee deal, solidifies its reputation as a potent and reliable defense asset. Dr. Ramarao’s tagline for the system, “Sara akash hamara” (“The whole sky is ours”), proved prescient in light of Thursday night’s events.
