Sat May 10 01:41:00 UTC 2025: **Bengaluru’s BBMP to be Restructured into Multiple Corporations**

**Bengaluru, India (May 10, 2025)** – The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bengaluru’s civic body, is set for a major restructuring. The Karnataka state government will officially implement the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act (GBGA), 2024, on May 15th, effectively dissolving the current BBMP as it’s currently constituted under the 2021 Act. However, a new entity with the same name will continue governing the city.

The GBGA allows for the creation of up to seven separate corporations to replace the current BBMP. While the government remains tight-lipped about the exact number, officials suggest a likely split into three to five corporations. A new administrator will be appointed to oversee this process. The current BBMP commissioner will remain in their position, at least initially.

The Greater Bengaluru Authority, established under the new Act, will not exceed the existing BBMP area of 709 sq km. The process of splitting the BBMP into smaller corporations will begin immediately following the May 15th notification.

The move has not been without controversy. Bengaluru Town Hall, a civic society collective, plans to challenge the Act in the Supreme Court, arguing that it violates the 74th amendment of the Indian Constitution. The Governor’s assent to the Bill followed a period of clarification requests.
