Sat May 10 15:26:29 UTC 2025: ## Haryana Women’s Self-Help Group Thrives After Prime Minister’s Endorsement

**Rohtak, Haryana, May 10, 2025** – A self-help group (SHG) in Rohtak, Haryana, has seen a dramatic increase in success after receiving a shout-out from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Unnati Swayam Sahayata Samuh, comprised of around 300 women, engages in block printing, sewing, and crafting jute bags and jewelry. Their work, which includes creating bedsheets, sarees, and dupattas featuring images of Mahatma Gandhi and the Prime Minister himself, has gained national attention.

The group’s success story is highlighted by the experiences of its members. Sundar, a 31-year-old full-time worker, earns ₹9,000 per month, significantly improving her family’s financial situation and enabling family trips. Kavita, another member, is saving to buy a two-wheeler after facing difficulties commuting to work. Manta, a key figure in the group, has been instrumental in its growth and has even funded her son’s Ayurvedic medical education.

The group’s turning point came in July 2024 when Prime Minister Modi praised their work on his radio program, “Mann Ki Baat.” This endorsement led to a doubling of orders, silencing initial critics and significantly boosting their income. The SHG, which initially started with a ₹40,000 loan, has repaid the debt and secured permanent stalls in prominent Delhi locations. They are now planning to expand their reach through online marketplaces.

Even during the COVID-19 lockdowns, the group demonstrated resilience, fulfilling large orders for cloth masks, providing crucial income for its members and their families. The success of Unnati showcases the power of community-based initiatives and the transformative impact of government recognition. The women’s improved financial standing has also led to a shift in their family dynamics, with women now taking a prominent role in household finances. The group’s story stands as an example of female empowerment and entrepreneurial success in rural India.
