Sat May 10 17:59:17 UTC 2025: **Tamil Nadu Students Show Improvement in Learning Outcomes, but Challenges Remain in Higher Grades**

Chennai, May 11, 2025 – The State-level Achievement Survey 2025 (SLAS) revealed positive learning outcomes for students in Classes 3 and 5 in Tamil Nadu, but highlighted significant challenges in Class 8. The survey, a first for the state, assessed 980,341 students across 45,924 government and aided schools.

Classes 3 and 5 demonstrated strong performance in Tamil, achieving average scores of 67% and 76% respectively, exceeding national averages in some subjects. This success is attributed to the effective implementation of the Ennum Ezhuthum program, designed to enhance student learning. However, a significant drop in performance was observed in Class 8, with students scoring only 38% in mathematics and 37% in science. English scores also showed a consistent decline across all grades.

J. Jeyaranjan, Vice Chairman of the State Planning Commission, attributed the Class 8 underperformance to learning loss incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized the need for increased utilization of programs like Ennum Ezhuthum and Illam Thedi Kalvi to address the issue. Further interventions and granular-level action plans are planned for the coming year to improve learning outcomes in all grades. The SLAS will be conducted annually to monitor progress.
