Sat May 10 12:50:13 UTC 2025: ## US-China Trade Talks Yield Little Hope for Breakthrough, but Switzerland Remains Optimistic

**Geneva, Switzerland** – High-stakes trade talks between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and China’s trade envoy He Lifeng concluded in Geneva on Saturday with little indication of a major breakthrough, despite hopes from the Swiss hosts. The meeting, the first since the US imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese goods, prompting retaliatory tariffs from China, lasted approximately two hours, followed by a luncheon.

While the talks aimed to de-escalate the escalating trade war, analysts remain pessimistic about a significant resolution. The US has indicated it will not unilaterally lower tariffs, demanding concessions from China. Conversely, China has stated its opposition to US tariffs remains unchanged.

US President Donald Trump, who initiated the sweeping tariffs last month, suggested a reduction of the 145% tariff to 80%, while also claiming China initiated the talks. China, however, countered that the US requested the discussions. The conflicting statements highlight the deep distrust between the two nations.

Despite the low expectations, Swiss Economy Minister Guy Parmelin expressed optimism, stating that the talks themselves represented a success. He expressed hope that a “roadmap” for future discussions might emerge, leading to a de-escalation of tensions. The talks may continue into Sunday or Monday. The main sticking points remain China’s alleged unfair trade practices and failure to curb fentanyl exports, as cited by the US, and China’s staunch rejection of what it considers “bullying” tactics.
