Thu May 08 20:09:03 UTC 2025: **India Conducts Nationwide Mock Drills Amidst Heightened Tensions**

NEW DELHI, INDIA – Following recent terrorist attacks in Kashmir, India launched a nationwide civil defence exercise, “Operation Abhyaas,” on May 7th, simulating various emergency scenarios, including aerial attacks and mass casualty incidents. The drills, conducted in public spaces, hospitals, and schools, aimed to enhance preparedness for potential military action from Pakistan or further terrorist attacks.

The exercise evoked mixed reactions. While some lauded the drills as a valuable learning experience, improving awareness of safety protocols and calming anxieties, others criticized the lack of coordination and communication in some areas. Reports from Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana highlighted varying degrees of preparedness and public response. In Jaipur, for example, residents reported inconsistencies in blackout drills and instances of panic buying. In Gurugram, social media posts indicated confusion and a lack of clear communication regarding the exercise. However, many older citizens praised the drills recalling similar exercises in previous wars.

The drills included simulations of building collapses, bomb blasts, and hospital emergencies, testing the response capabilities of emergency services and medical facilities. Hospitals such as Fortis and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital participated in high-intensity simulations involving numerous casualties.

Schools across the country also participated, educating students about safety procedures and conducting mock drills. In some border areas, schools were closed and exams postponed.

The drills occurred less than two weeks after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, resulting in 26 deaths, intensifying concerns about potential escalation. While the drills were intended to prepare the nation for various emergencies, the varied responses highlighted the need for improved communication and coordination during future exercises.
