**Tiruchi, India (May 9, 2025)** – The Golden Rock Railway Workshop in Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu, has been selected by the Railway Board to handle major maintenance schedules for Vande Bharat Express trains. This decision shifts the responsibility from the Perambur workshop, also in Tamil Nadu.
To prepare for this undertaking, technical teams from the Golden Rock workshop have been dispatched to workshops in Mumbai, Ajmer, and Lucknow to observe maintenance procedures and infrastructure. Further visits to other depots are planned.
The Golden Rock workshop, a historic facility, currently maintains diesel locomotives, conventional coaches, and even steam locomotives for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. However, accommodating Vande Bharat trains will require significant upgrades, including a new shed with overhead electrical arrangements and specialized equipment. The workshop is considering a separate facility on nearby railway land.
A preliminary cost estimate for the Vande Bharat maintenance is currently being developed. The high-speed trains, introduced in 2019, offer enhanced passenger comfort and safety features such as automatic doors, sealed gangways, and advanced fire suppression systems. Their selection for maintenance at the Golden Rock workshop marks a significant expansion of the workshop’s capabilities.
