Fri May 09 14:00:18 UTC 2025: **Kerala’s Ambitious Passenger Ship Project to Gulf Countries Faces Delays**

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, May 9, 2025 – Kerala’s plan to launch a passenger ship service connecting the state to Gulf countries, particularly the UAE, has encountered significant delays. The project, aimed at providing a more affordable travel alternative to expensive airline flights, especially during peak seasons, has been hampered by the prospective operator’s inability to secure suitable vessels.

Initially, two companies expressed interest in the project, which was bid out by the Kerala Maritime Board (KMB) in March 2024. Following discussions, one company, White Shipping based in Chennai, is still negotiating with the KMB, but has yet to acquire the necessary ships, according to KMB chairman N.S. Pillai. The KMB’s role is to provide port infrastructure, while the operator is responsible for acquiring and operating the vessels.

The delay is a setback for Kerala, which has a large diaspora in the UAE, estimated at 1.9 million people. The state government had previously attempted to address the high cost of air travel by exploring chartered flights, but this initiative also proved unsuccessful. The passenger ship service was envisioned to cater to both budget-conscious travelers and those seeking a premium cruise experience. Despite the setbacks, the KMB remains hopeful that the project will eventually proceed.
