DHARWAD, INDIA (May 9, 2025) – The Gangotri house, a museum dedicated to the legendary Hindustani classical singer Gangubai Hangal, is falling into disrepair, sparking outrage among music lovers and highlighting bureaucratic apathy in Karnataka. Located in Dharwad, a city renowned for its cultural heritage, the house—once meticulously restored in 2008 by the Karnataka government—now stands dilapidated.
The museum, inaugurated by then-Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa in the presence of Hangal herself, was intended to preserve the legacy of the renowned singer and serve as a cultural center. However, following Hangal’s death in 2009, the building fell into disuse and neglect, with various departments reportedly assigning blame instead of taking responsibility for its upkeep.
Despite repeated assurances of restoration, the house remains in a state of disrepair, a stark contrast to its former glory and a symbol of the failure to protect India’s cultural heritage. The situation is particularly disheartening given Dharwad’s reputation as a city where “if you throw a stone, it will land on the house of either an artist or a scholar.” The deterioration of Gangotri stands as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for better preservation of significant cultural sites.
