**New Delhi, May 9, 2025** – Following India’s suspension of the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty in response to a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, World Bank President Ajay Banga has clarified that the institution’s role is limited to that of a facilitator. Banga stated that there is “a lot of speculation in the media about how the World Bank will step in & fix the problem, but it’s all bunk.” He emphasized that the World Bank’s involvement is solely as a facilitator in the agreement, which governs the sharing of Indus River waters between India and Pakistan. The treaty, brokered by the World Bank in 1960, allocates the waters of the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers. The suspension marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations. The Indus River system is vital to both countries, with India controlling the upper riparian and Pakistan the lower.
