**New Delhi/Islamabad** – Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply following a series of cross-border attacks. Indian officials allege that Pakistan launched missiles and drones targeting military installations in India and Indian-administered Kashmir. Pakistan denies these accusations, but claims to have killed 40-50 Indian soldiers and downed two dozen Indian drones along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border dividing Kashmir.
The escalating conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life. At least 31 Pakistani civilians have been reported killed in the attacks, according to a Pakistani military official. On the Indian side of the LoC, cross-border shelling has claimed at least 16 lives, according to India’s defense ministry. These events follow a militant attack last month in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed over two dozen civilians, mostly tourists, an incident India blames on Pakistan. Pakistan denies any involvement.
India has confirmed retaliatory strikes targeting air defense systems within Pakistan, aiming to dismantle the infrastructure of the Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militant groups, designated as terrorist organizations by many countries. Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, insists his country acted in self-defense and accuses India of escalating the conflict. He placed the onus of de-escalation on India, while also acknowledging back-channel communication between the two nations’ national security advisors.
The US has called on both nations to de-escalate, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio speaking separately with both Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. The US has also expressed support for an investigation into the April tourist massacre. Despite the calls for de-escalation, heavy shelling continues in areas near the LoC, and blackouts have been reported in several Indian states. Schools in Punjab have been closed for three days as a precautionary measure.
The situation remains volatile, raising concerns of a wider conflict. While both nations have claimed successes, claims regarding the downing of Indian jets by Pakistan remain unverified. The conflicting narratives and ongoing military actions highlight the extreme fragility of peace in the region. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and urging both sides to engage in dialogue and de-escalate the crisis.
