**New Delhi, India** – India reported a significant escalation in tensions along its border with Pakistan on Friday night. Pakistan initiated intense cross-border shelling in multiple sectors of Jammu and Kashmir, including Uri, Poonch, Kupwara, and Nowgam-Handwara, causing widespread panic among border residents. Simultaneously, at least 26 drone attacks were launched from Pakistan targeting various locations across India, from Jammu and Kashmir to Rajasthan and Punjab.
The attacks involved multiple Pakistani drones attempting incursions into Indian airspace. While Indian air defense systems successfully neutralized most of the drones, one armed drone targeted a civilian area in Faridkot, Punjab, seriously injuring a family member. Explosives dropped from other downed drones caused fires in at least one instance. Further, Pakistan attempted a drone attack on the Awantipora airbase, which was also thwarted. Reports indicate at least 15 drones were sighted in Amritsar alone, prompting a red alert and restrictions on civilian movement. Authorities also confirmed the downing of nine Pakistani drones in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan and one in Barmer. One drone was also intercepted in Firozpur, Punjab.
The Indian Army responded effectively to the shelling and drone attacks, retaliating with counter-fire. The defense minister has instructed the army to take strong and punitive action against the Pakistani military. The Indian armed forces are on high alert across the affected regions, with military activity intensifying at several sensitive locations. These include Samba, Jammu, Pathankot, and areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in northern Kashmir.
The incidents resulted in a tense atmosphere across several states. Air raid sirens sounded in Jammu, causing panic and prompting businesses to close. Similar precautions were taken in Rajouri. Reports indicate that at least two artillery shells landed in Poonch. While no casualties have yet been officially confirmed, the situation remains extremely volatile.
In response to the escalating situation, the Indian government extended the suspension of domestic flights at 24 airports until May 15th. The Prime Minister also met with former members of the armed forces to discuss the current situation. Videos of the drone attacks and countermeasures have also emerged on social media.
