**New Delhi, India** – The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been indefinitely suspended due to the escalating military conflict between India and Pakistan. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cited the inappropriateness of continuing the tournament amidst the ongoing crisis.
The decision follows the cancellation of Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala after air raid alerts in nearby cities. A BCCI official stated that continuing the IPL while the country is at war would be unsuitable.
Twelve league matches and four playoff games remain unplayed. The BCCI plans to reschedule these matches at a later date, contingent upon the de-escalation of the conflict.
The suspension comes after India launched missile strikes on alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam. The escalating conflict led to air raid alerts and reported explosions in several Indian cities, including Pathankot and Amritsar, prompting a temporary blackout in these areas. Similar concerns led to the relocation of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) to the UAE.
The heightened security concerns have caused significant anxiety among the 62 foreign players participating in the IPL. Teams are making arrangements for their safe return home. While players are reportedly doing well, concerns remain amidst the ongoing military actions.
The IPL’s suspension was met with widespread understanding. The Lucknow Super Giants posted “Nation first” on social media following the announcement. Cricket Australia and New Zealand’s players’ association are closely monitoring the situation in both India and Pakistan.
