Thu May 08 18:30:00 UTC 2025: ## India Launches Retaliatory Strikes After Pakistan Attacks; Tensions Soar
**NEW DELHI/KARACHI** – India has launched a series of retaliatory strikes against Pakistan following a spate of cross-border attacks, escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Explosions have been reported in Karachi, Pakistan, near the port, following Indian military action.
The escalation began on April 22nd with a Pakistan-sponsored terrorist attack in India’s Pahalgam, killing 26 people. India responded with Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist installations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This prompted further, unsuccessful attacks from Pakistan on Indian military installations.
In response to these attacks, India mobilized its armed forces, including the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and destroyers like INS Visakhapatnam. Indian officials claim to have shot down numerous Pakistani missiles (at least 8 in Jammu and Kashmir and 30 in Rajasthan), as well as Pakistani drones and fighter jets (one F-16 and two JF-17s). India also reportedly conducted a drone strike on Lahore, disabling its defense systems.
Following the heightened military activity, India’s Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has implemented enhanced security measures at all airports nationwide, including secondary security checks for all passengers and a ban on visitor entry into terminal buildings. Air marshals have been deployed.
India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that India’s actions were “measured, precise, and non-escalatory,” a claim disputed by Pakistan. The situation remains volatile, with the potential for further escalation.
