Fri May 09 06:58:43 UTC 2025: ## India’s Air Defenses Repel Two Waves of Pakistani Missile and Drone Attacks

**New Delhi, May 9** – India successfully thwarted two separate waves of missile and drone attacks launched from Pakistan within 48 hours, according to reports. The attacks, targeting military installations in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan, were met with a robust response from India’s layered air defense system.

The first wave, beginning late on May 7 and continuing into the early hours of May 8, targeted military facilities near 15 Indian cities. The second wave followed hours later, prompting air raid sirens and blackouts in border areas. Both attacks involved a combination of missiles and Israeli-made HARPY drones.

India’s defense successfully intercepted the projectiles using a multi-layered system. This included an integrated counter-UAS (unmanned aircraft system) grid, which uses radar and radio frequency sensors to detect and neutralize drones and missiles. Visuals showed several projectiles being shot down over Indian cities. The system employs both non-explosive countermeasures, such as jamming signals, and interceptor projectiles.

The S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile system, with its 600km detection range and 400km interception capability, played a significant role. Other key components included the short-range SAMAR system, utilizing Russian-origin Vympel missiles, and the indigenous Akash missile system, known for its ability to engage multiple targets simultaneously. The S-125 Pechora system, a legacy system still proving effective, also contributed to the defense. These systems, alongside the Indian Air Force’s fighter jets, including Rafales, formed a comprehensive defense network.

Sources claim that the attacks followed India’s “Operation Sindoor,” which reportedly eliminated nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. While Pakistan has not officially acknowledged the attacks, the Indian response showcased the effectiveness of its advanced air defense capabilities, solidifying its reputation for robust aerial protection.
