**Mumbai, May 9, 2025** – The Maharashtra government is reviewing a proposal for the early release of Abu Salem, the extradited gangster currently serving a prison sentence. This follows a plea from Salem to the Bombay High Court, claiming he has already served the equivalent of a 25-year sentence when considering remission for good behavior.
In an affidavit submitted to the court on Wednesday, the government confirmed the proposal is under consideration and a decision will be announced shortly. Salem’s extradition from Portugal occurred in November 2005, meaning he has spent approximately 19 years incarcerated. The government’s response comes in response to Salem’s petition before Justices Girish Kulkarni and Advait Sethna. The court is now awaiting the government’s final decision on the matter.
