Fri May 09 13:42:51 UTC 2025: ## India Conducts Civil Defence Drill at Nuclear Plant Amidst Pakistan Conflict
**Tirunelveli, India (May 9, 2025)** – Amidst heightened tensions with Pakistan, India conducted a civil defence preparedness drill at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) on Friday. The 85-minute exercise, which simulated a radiation release, tested the emergency response procedures of the plant’s personnel. The drill comes as the KKNPP, operating two 1,000 MW reactors with plans for four more, is considered a high-security complex, heavily guarded by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and equipped with anti-aircraft weaponry.
The drill involved alerting personnel to a “plant emergency” followed by a “site emergency,” prompting them to take precautionary measures as outlined by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. All personnel underwent radiation checks. While routine drills are regularly conducted, KKNPP sources stated this exercise was part of a broader civil defence initiative in response to the ongoing conflict.
Similar heightened security measures have been implemented at other key installations, including the INS Kattabomman naval communication centre and the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Propulsion Research Complex. Both locations have been designated “no drone zones,” with warnings of severe consequences, including lethal force, for any unauthorized drone activity. Intelligence sources confirmed that these measures are in place to safeguard these vital assets.
