Thu May 08 20:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Centuries-Old Trees Reveal Bilbao’s History
**Bilbao, Spain** – A new study has revealed the surprising age of some of Bilbao’s city trees, with some plane trees in the city center exceeding 170 years old. The research, part of the RESISTE project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, examined the vulnerability of urban trees to climate change. Researchers from the University of Valladolid’s Soria campus, collaborating with Bilbao City Council, focused on plane trees, cedars, horse chestnuts, and cypresses.
The oldest trees, planted in the early to mid-19th century during city park renovations, have survived floods, droughts, and significant urban development projects, such as the construction of the Arenal underground car park. Their survival is considered remarkable, especially given the harsh conditions of city life.
“These trees are literal witnesses to Bilbao’s history,” stated José Miguel Olano, a researcher from the University of Valladolid. “The chemical composition of their wood reflects the rise and fall of the Altos Hornos [steelworks].”
While older trees may exist in historical gardens, the researchers highlight the exceptional longevity of these specimens in the heart of the city. The study, which also included Madrid, Soria, Córdoba, Jaén, and Avilés, aims to quantify and analyze the age of urban trees to better understand and protect this valuable heritage. Final results are expected in the coming months. The discovery underscores the importance of preserving these living monuments to Bilbao’s past.
