**NEW DELHI, May 8, 2025** – India has vehemently rejected Pakistan’s claim that India targeted the Neelum-Jhelum hydroelectric project in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), calling it a “complete fabrication” and a “blatant lie.” Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated this at a press briefing on Thursday, suggesting the allegation is a pretext for potential attacks on similar Indian infrastructure. He warned Pakistan would be held responsible for any repercussions.
Mr. Misri also denied reports of contact between Indian and Pakistani National Security Advisers since Wednesday’s Operation Sindoor. He emphasized that India has not targeted infrastructure within Pakistan. Pakistan’s accusations follow India’s decision to put the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) “in abeyance” after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam.
Mr. Misri accused Pakistan of spreading disinformation regarding the IWT, highlighting that India has repeatedly requested negotiations to modify the treaty, which he argued is outdated given technological, climatic, and demographic changes since its inception in the 1960s. He asserted that India has consistently honored the treaty despite periods of conflict and adversarial relations, while Pakistan has been in violation. He further stated that Pakistan has hampered India’s rights to utilize its legitimate share of water under the treaty. Mr. Misri noted the need for the treaty to adapt to modern advancements.
