**NEW DELHI** – India successfully thwarted a series of missile and drone attacks launched by Pakistan on the night of May 8-9, according to the Indian Ministry of Defence. The Indian Air Defence System, notably the S-400 air defence system, intercepted and destroyed the incoming projectiles, protecting several military installations in the country’s northern and western regions. India subsequently launched retaliatory strikes targeting military bases in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi, causing significant damage to Pakistani air defence radars.
Simultaneously, Pakistan launched a sophisticated disinformation campaign alongside its military attacks, disseminating numerous fabricated videos and misleading reports on social media. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact-check unit actively countered this propaganda, debunking seven viral videos aimed at spreading fear and confusion among the Indian public. The PIB investigated claims circulating between 10 PM on May 8 and 6:30 AM on May 9, revealing them to be false. These included fabricated videos depicting drone attacks that were actually unrelated events, such as a field fire mistaken for an attack, and the reuse of footage from previous incidents, such as the 2020 Beirut explosion. The PIB also exposed fake reports of attacks on Indian army brigades and a forged letter attributed to a non-existent army chief. All claims of widespread airport closures were also deemed false.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that all Pakistani drone and missile attacks were unsuccessful and resulted in no damage or casualties to India. The Indian military highlighted its strength and technological capabilities in successfully repelling the attacks. While Pakistan attempted to target 15 cities including Awantipora, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bathinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Faludi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, all attacks were neutralized. The PIB continues to monitor and counter disinformation campaigns.
