Thu May 08 16:44:49 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru University Promotes Urban Gardening to Green the City
**Bengaluru, India (May 8, 2025)** – The University of Agricultural Sciences-Bengaluru (UAS-B) is launching a city-wide initiative to promote urban gardening and combat waste management issues. Driven by a desire to increase green spaces and encourage residents to grow their own vegetables, the university has introduced a short-term urban gardening course and plans to offer consultancy services tailored to individual needs and space limitations.
UAS-B Vice-Chancellor S.V. Suresha emphasized the dual benefits of the program: increased food security for families and reduced waste burden on the city. The initiative aims to utilize even small spaces, including unmaintained plots with the consent of owners, turning them into productive vegetable gardens. The university is also targeting urban children, aiming to reconnect them with the process of plant cultivation.
The two-day course covers various aspects of urban gardening, including vertical gardening, indoor plant cultivation, composting techniques, and pest management. Participants may also purchase a kit containing essential materials. The university is further planning workshops for architects to integrate urban gardening considerations into building designs, particularly for terrace farming, addressing concerns such as waterproofing.
Recognizing the growing interest in urban farming amongst city dwellers, the university is expanding its efforts beyond its annual agricultural fair, where urban gardening concepts have already been introduced. Future plans include the development of customized urban gardening models utilizing techniques like vertical gardening and hydroponics. The first two-day workshop, costing ₹2,000 per person, is already underway, with monthly workshops planned for the future.
