**Salt Lake City, UT** – After a year-long process involving extensive fan voting and trademark hurdles, the Utah NHL franchise officially revealed its new name and branding on Wednesday: the Utah Mammoth. The announcement, featuring NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, marks the end of the team’s temporary identity as the Utah Hockey Club.
The name “Mammoth,” inspired by the prehistoric creatures that once roamed the state, emerged victorious from a four-round community voting process involving over 850,000 ballots. Owners Ryan and Ashley Smith described the Mammoth as a symbol of the team’s strength and connection to Utah’s history. The logo, designed by Doubleday & Cartwright, features a mammoth’s head incorporating subtle references to the Wasatch Mountains and the letter “U,” with the team’s rallying cry declared as “Tusks Up!”
The team’s inaugural jerseys, showcasing the Mammoth logo on home jerseys and the word “Utah” on away jerseys, will be available later this offseason, with draft picks wearing them in June. A new mascot will also be unveiled in the coming months. The team’s unique jersey design mirrors that of the Carolina Hurricanes, the only other team currently using this approach.
The selection of “Mammoth” follows the rejection of the previously popular “Yeti” option due to trademark conflicts. The team confirmed that it has addressed all trademark concerns and secured support from the Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League. Limited-edition Mammoth merchandise went on sale at the Delta Center on Wednesday. Utah secured the fourth overall pick in the NHL draft lottery, further fueling excitement for the upcoming season. The team’s former identity as the Utah Hockey Club will be remembered as a part of the franchise’s history.
