Thu May 08 02:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Nationwide Mock Drills Test India’s Emergency Preparedness Amidst Heightened Tensions
**New Delhi, India –** A nationwide civil defence exercise, codenamed “Operation Abhyaas,” took place across India on Wednesday, testing the country’s readiness for various emergency scenarios. The drills, ordered by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in response to recent terrorist attacks, included simulated air raids, blackouts, fire emergencies, and rescue operations.
The exercises, which followed Indian military strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), involved participation from numerous agencies, including the police, fire services, civil defense volunteers, NCC, NSS, and the armed forces. Cities across the country, from Delhi and Mumbai to smaller towns, participated. Mock blackouts were implemented in many areas, with residents urged to remain calm and stay indoors.
Congress leader Tikaram Jully expressed confidence in the nation’s preparedness, stating that the mock drills are designed to prepare for any eventuality and that the Indian people stand united behind their country and forces.
The drills weren’t without their logistical challenges. In Amritsar, Punjab, a blackout rehearsal had to be repeated in the early hours of Thursday after an initial drill the previous evening. Reports from across the country detailed the various drills, including simulations at major transportation hubs like airports and railway stations, as well as schools and government buildings. The exercises also focused on testing communication links with the Indian Air Force.
The MHA emphasized that the drills aimed to assess preparedness for complex security threats and improve coordination among emergency response agencies. The exercises also served to educate the public on safety measures during emergencies, including evacuation procedures and the importance of having emergency kits readily available. While some initial confusion and minor disruptions occurred, the overall response was deemed successful, highlighting India’s commitment to bolstering its national security posture.
