Thu May 08 17:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Palworld Forced to Make Gameplay Changes Due to Nintendo Lawsuit

**SAN FRANCISCO –** Palworld, the wildly successful monster-catching game, has implemented significant gameplay changes due to an ongoing patent infringement lawsuit filed by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. Developer Pocketpair confirmed that patches v0.3.11 and v0.5.5, released in November 2024 and today respectively, directly address concerns raised in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit, which seeks millions of yen in damages and an injunction halting Palworld’s release, centers on three Japanese patents related to the core mechanic of capturing creatures in a virtual field. While Palworld’s launch earlier this year broke sales records and spurred comparisons to Pokémon, the similarities in creature-catching mechanics led to legal action.

Patch v0.3.11 removed the ability to summon Pals using a Pal Sphere, replacing it with a static summon. Further changes in v0.5.5 alter the gliding mechanic, requiring a glider item rather than relying solely on Pals. Pocketpair described these changes as “compromises” necessary to avoid an injunction that could severely impact the game’s development and sales.

Despite these concessions, Pocketpair maintains that it will continue to contest the lawsuit, challenging the validity of the patents. The company stated that these changes were implemented to avoid a “greater deterioration of the gameplay experience for players” that an injunction would cause. The company expressed its understanding of fan disappointment but stressed the necessity of the adjustments to protect the game’s future.
