Thu May 08 09:50:00 UTC 2025: ## India-Pakistan Border Escalates After Airstrikes and Drone Attacks
**NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD** – Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated following a series of cross-border attacks and retaliatory actions. The conflict, centered around the disputed Kashmir region, has already resulted in numerous civilian casualties and raised fears of a wider war.
India launched airstrikes on Wednesday targeting what it described as “terrorist infrastructure” in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The strikes, dubbed “Operation Sindoor,” reportedly killed at least 31 Pakistani civilians, according to a Pakistani military official. India claims the operation was a response to a militant attack last month that killed over two dozen tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir, an attack India blamed on Pakistan-based militant groups. Pakistan denies involvement.
Pakistan responded by claiming to have shot down five Indian fighter jets, including at least one French-made Rafale, using Chinese-made J-10C fighter jets. This claim is being investigated by French authorities. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister also claimed a Chinese team was present at the Foreign Office during the event, though China denies having detailed knowledge of the situation. India has not yet commented on Pakistan’s claims of downed jets.
Following this, Pakistan reported shooting down 25 Indian loitering munition drones, including Israeli-made Harop drones, across the country. One drone reportedly injured four Pakistani soldiers and killed one civilian near Lahore. India has confirmed targeting Pakistani air defense systems in response to the drone and missile attacks.
The escalating conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border dividing Kashmir. At least 16 civilians have died in Indian-administered Kashmir due to Pakistani shelling, including women and children. Additionally, at least 12 civilians were reported killed in Indian-administered Kashmir by Pakistani shelling on Wednesday. Residents near the LoC described harrowing experiences, seeking shelter from the intense shelling.
The UN has expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions, calling for both sides to exercise restraint and seek a diplomatic solution. Several countries, including Turkey, have also condemned the violence and urged de-escalation.
The situation has caused significant flight disruptions, with several airports in northern India and Pakistan temporarily closed. Many international airlines are avoiding Pakistani airspace.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, expressing gratitude for Turkey’s support. Sharif vowed to protect Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Pakistan’s response to India’s actions remains uncertain, but its potential for further escalation remains a significant concern. The US has offered its assistance, but the extent of its involvement remains to be seen. The situation continues to unfold rapidly, with the potential for further violence remaining high.
