**Chennai, May 8, 2025** – Dr. S. Soundarapandian, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon and founder of the Soundarapandian Bone and Joint Hospital in Anna Nagar, Chennai, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 94. He is survived by his wife, Kothai, two sons (both orthopaedic surgeons), and a daughter. His funeral will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
Dr. Soundarapandian, who continued practicing until 2020, played a pivotal role in the development of the Institute of Orthopaedics at the Government General Hospital (RGGGH), according to Dr. Mohan Rajan, chairman and medical director of Rajan Eye Care Hospital. He described Dr. Soundarapandian as instrumental in establishing the hospital as a gold standard institution for complex surgeries during a time when private hospitals were scarce.
A graduate of Stanley Medical College and Madras Medical College, Dr. Soundarapandian also completed a Commonwealth fellowship program at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford. He served as a professor of orthopaedics at Madras Medical College for over 30 years, heading the department before establishing his own hospital in 1982. Colleagues remember him as a “doyen of orthopaedic surgery,” a respected teacher and mentor who significantly contributed to the field.
