Thu May 08 10:10:00 UTC 2025: ## India Imposes Nighttime Blackout in Border District Amid Heightened Tensions with Pakistan
**Gurdaspur, India –** A nighttime blackout has been imposed in Gurdaspur district, Punjab, from 9 pm to 5 am, effective May 8th, following heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. The order, issued under the Civil Defence Act, 1968, by both the central and Punjab governments, is a precautionary measure to address potential security threats along the India-Pakistan border.
The blackout exempts Gurdaspur Central Jail and hospitals; however, these facilities must maintain complete darkness by securely covering windows. Simultaneously, both Punjab and Rajasthan have cancelled leaves for all police and administrative personnel and closed schools in border districts.
The move comes in the wake of recent military actions. India launched “Operation Sindoor,” carrying out air and military strikes inside Pakistan following a terror attack. Subsequently, Pakistan attempted to target multiple military sites across northern and western India using drones and missiles, which were intercepted by India’s air defense systems.
The closure of schools in six Punjab districts (Ferozepur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran) and four Rajasthan districts (Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Barmer) is also a precautionary measure amid the escalating situation. The extended 532km Punjab-Pakistan and 1070km Rajasthan-Pakistan borders are considered particularly vulnerable. The blackout and other measures are intended to maintain security and minimize any potential impact from cross-border attacks.
