Wed May 07 20:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Amritsar on High Alert: Blackout Drills & Border Closure Amidst Rising Tensions

Amritsar, Punjab – Amidst escalating India-Pakistan tensions and heavy monsoon rains, the Amritsar district administration has reinstated blackout drills as part of a nationwide civil defense exercise. The drills, according to a statement by the Amritsar Deputy Commissioner (DC), aim to ensure public safety and preparedness.

Adding to the heightened alert, loud explosions were reported after midnight in Amritsar and the Dera Baba Nanak area of Gurdaspur. Further escalating the situation, the BSF has suspended the popular Attari-Wagah border retreat ceremony indefinitely. This closure, along with reports that Pakistan is refusing to accept its own citizens back, signals a significant hardening of the border situation.

Compounding the challenges, the monsoon season is causing widespread flooding in Amritsar, with 34 areas reportedly on the brink of submergence. Municipal corporation preparations for this eventuality remain incomplete. The situation in Amritsar reflects a confluence of security concerns and natural disaster preparedness, putting immense pressure on local authorities.
