**Colombo, May 8, 2025** – Sri Lanka has reaffirmed its commitment to non-alignment in the face of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, following India’s “Operation Sindoor” military strikes. Cabinet spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa stated that Sri Lanka will not allow its territory to be used by either nation against the other and will focus on de-escalation and regional peace. While maintaining good relations with both countries, Sri Lanka emphasized its commitment to sovereignty and neutrality.

The statement follows India’s cross-border strikes in response to the April 22nd Pahalgam terrorist attack, which claimed 26 lives. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed Sri Lanka’s solidarity with India in combating terrorism.

The South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR) has urged both India and Pakistan to de-escalate the situation, warning of the devastating impact on the people of South Asia. SAHR condemned Operation Sindoor and Pakistan’s subsequent retaliation, calling for a UN-led investigation into the Pahalgam attack and emphasizing the need for dialogue and diplomacy. The organization also highlighted the importance of avoiding the weaponization of religion and expressed solidarity with the people of Kashmir. The SAHR statement further underscored the numerous human rights and humanitarian challenges facing the region, highlighting the urgent need for peace.
