**JAMMU, INDIA –** Multiple loud explosions shook Jammu on Thursday evening, sending shockwaves through the city and triggering widespread panic among residents. The explosions, which followed air raid sirens and a city-wide blackout, occurred just a day after India launched airstrikes targeting nine alleged terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Witnesses reported seeing red flashes and projectiles in the sky before the blasts. Social media was flooded with images and videos depicting the blackout and widespread fear, with some users claiming to witness missiles flying overhead. Similar sirens were also reported in Kupwara, Baramulla, and Akhnoor.
The cause of the explosions remains unclear. Former Jammu and Kashmir DGP Shesh Paul Vaid, in a post on X, described the situation as a suspected “bombing, shelling, or missile strikes,” while urging calm and highlighting the support of the Indian Armed Forces. Following the explosions, shopkeepers rushed home, adding to the atmosphere of uncertainty.
The incident comes in the wake of “Operation Sindoor,” India’s cross-border strikes on Wednesday, launched in response to the recent massacre of 26 people in Pahalgam. Indian officials stated that the targets were selected based on intelligence and their history of terrorist activities. The strikes targeted five training camps inside PoK and four across the international border within Pakistan.
The heightened tensions and the explosions have left Jammu residents on edge, as the situation remains fluid and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the blasts.
