Thu May 08 01:44:27 UTC 2025: ## India Launches Military Strikes Against Pakistan in “Operation Sindoor”

**NEW DELHI, May 8, 2025** – India launched a series of missile strikes targeting nine terror camps across the Line of Control and the International Boundary with Pakistan on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, in an operation code-named “Operation Sindoor.” The strikes were in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who briefed envoys from 13 UN Security Council member nations. Pakistan’s envoy was excluded from the briefing.

The Indian government has defended the action as a response, not an escalation, and convened an all-party meeting for Thursday to discuss the operation. However, Pakistan’s National Security Committee condemned the strikes as a violation of its sovereignty and authorized retaliatory action. The extent of casualties and damage in Pakistan is yet to be fully reported.

Following the strikes, precautionary measures were implemented across India. Union Home Minister Amit Shah instructed states bordering Pakistan and Nepal to stockpile essential supplies and maintain essential services, as scheduled mock drills were carried out nationwide. At least 21 Indian airports, mostly in the north and northwest, have been temporarily closed until May 10th.

Meanwhile, the ongoing conclave of cardinals in Vatican City to elect a new Pope has yet to produce a result. Black smoke emerged from the Sistine Chapel chimney on Wednesday signaling the lack of a decision.

In other news, the Supreme Court of India indicated it will soon release a communication regarding the investigation into the discovery of half-burnt currency notes at the Delhi residence of former Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma following a March 14 fire. Additionally, cricketer Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket. The Hindu newspaper also celebrated winning a World Media Award for Best in Digital Advertising.
