**Grand Rapids, MI & Washington, D.C. –** A mistrial was declared Thursday in the trial of former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr, charged with second-degree murder in the April 2022 shooting death of Patrick Lyoya. Lyoya, a 26-year-old refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, was fatally shot by Schurr following a traffic stop. The shooting, captured on video, sparked widespread protests and a $100 million federal civil lawsuit against Schurr and the city of Grand Rapids (later dismissed against the city). The jury was unable to reach a verdict.

Separately, the House of Representatives voted to rename the Gulf of Mexico, a move intended to codify a previous executive order by former President Trump. Details regarding the new name were not immediately available.
