Thu May 08 16:30:00 UTC 2025: ## India-Pakistan Conflict Escalates After Indian Strikes; Retaliation Promised

**ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI** – India and Pakistan are on the brink of a wider conflict following a major escalation early Wednesday. India launched airstrikes targeting what it called “terrorist infrastructure” in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, prompting retaliatory action from Pakistan.

The Indian strikes, codenamed “Operation Sindoor,” came in response to a deadly April massacre of tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir, which India blames on Pakistan-based militant groups Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). Indian officials presented maps and video evidence at a press conference, claiming to have destroyed several training camps. They insisted that no civilian targets were hit.

Pakistan’s military reported at least 31 deaths and 57 injuries from the Indian strikes. The Pakistani military also claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets, including possibly three Rafale jets, during an hour-long air battle involving 125 aircraft. A high-ranking French intelligence official confirmed at least one Rafale was lost, marking the first loss of this sophisticated aircraft in combat. India has not yet confirmed any jet losses. Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stated that Pakistan would only target military installations, avoiding civilian casualties. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed to avenge the deaths and praised his country’s air force for its swift response.

The conflict also resulted in cross-border shelling, with at least 12 deaths reported on the Indian side of the Line of Control. Both sides reported evacuations of citizens from areas deemed to be at risk. Satellite imagery confirmed damage to targets in Pakistan’s Punjab province, including a religious school.

International concern is mounting. US President Donald Trump urged both sides to de-escalate, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with officials from both countries. Qatar’s Prime Minister also engaged in diplomatic efforts. Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize laureate, also issued a plea for de-escalation and dialogue. Meanwhile, Israel voiced its support for India’s right to self-defense.

The situation remains extremely volatile, with the possibility of further escalation remaining high. The nature of Pakistan’s response and the international community’s intervention will be key factors in determining whether this conflict expands further. Numerous airlines have altered flight paths or canceled flights due to airspace closures. Civil defense drills were also carried out across India. The events have sent shockwaves through the region and the world, raising serious concerns about the potential for a wider regional conflict.
