Wed May 07 07:37:04 UTC 2025: ## Israeli Airstrike Devastates Sanaa Airport, Causing Half a Billion Dollars in Damage

**Sanaa, Yemen (May 7, 2025)** – An Israeli airstrike on Sanaa International Airport in Yemen has caused an estimated $500 million in damage, according to airport director Khaled al-Shaief. The attack, which occurred on May 7th, destroyed terminal buildings, equipment, and at least three Yemenia Airways planes. Al-Shaief stated that all flights are suspended until further notice, and that significant time and resources will be required for repairs.

The attack follows a Houthi missile strike near Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport on May 4th. While a ceasefire between the Houthis and the United States, brokered by Oman, was announced on May 6th to ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, it did not include Israel. The Houthis have vowed retaliation for the Sanaa attack.

The Houthis have been targeting Israeli and merchant ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since late 2023 in support of Palestinians amid the ongoing Gaza conflict. A previous two-month ceasefire in the Gaza war had temporarily halted these attacks. However, renewed threats to resume attacks in March, following Israel’s blockade of Gaza, prompted US military intervention with near-daily airstrikes against Houthi targets. The situation remains tense, with the potential for further escalation.
