**NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD, May 8, 2025** – India launched a major attack on Karachi Port and several other major Pakistani cities on May 7th, 2025, in response to escalating tensions and prior attacks by Pakistan. The retaliatory strikes followed a series of missile attacks by Pakistan targeting several Indian cities, including Jammu, Samba, RS Pura, and Arnia, all of which were successfully intercepted by Indian air defense systems.
A significant explosion near Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s residence in Islamabad further heightened the crisis. India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, confirmed the retaliatory actions, stating that they were targeted at terrorist infrastructure and were a measured response to Pakistan’s earlier aggression, which began on April 22nd. The Indian government reported over 100 terrorists killed in the strikes.
The Indian Defence Ministry detailed Pakistan’s attempts to engage multiple military targets across northern and western India using drones and missiles. These attacks were neutralized, and the ministry confirmed that India targeted Pakistani air defense radar systems in response, neutralizing at least one system in Lahore. The ministry also reported increased unprovoked firing across the Line of Control by Pakistan, resulting in sixteen civilian deaths, including women and children.
The escalating conflict led to a curfew being imposed in several Pakistani cities and a blackout reported in Jammu, Mata Vaishno Devi Temple, and other areas. While India maintains its commitment to de-escalation, the situation remains highly volatile. The international community is closely monitoring the developments with growing concern.
