**NEW DELHI** – The Indian armed forces held a press briefing Wednesday detailing Operation Sindoor, the country’s response to the Pahalagam terror attack. The briefing, led by Colonel Sofiya Qureshi of the Indian Army and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh of the Indian Air Force, notably highlighted Colonel Qureshi’s distinguished career.

Colonel Qureshi’s accomplishments were previously recognized by the Supreme Court of India in a landmark 2020 judgment granting permanent commissions to women officers. The court cited her as a prime example of women officers bringing laurels to the armed forces. Specifically, the court highlighted her role as the first woman to lead an Indian Army contingent in a multinational military exercise, “Exercise Force 18,” the largest ever hosted by India. Her service in the 2006 United Nations peacekeeping operation in Congo, where she monitored ceasefires and participated in humanitarian efforts, was also mentioned. The briefing further underscored the significance of women’s contributions to the Indian Armed Forces.
