Thu May 08 09:28:58 UTC 2025: ## New Documentary Identifies Israeli Soldier Who Killed Al Jazeera Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh
**Washington, DC** – A new documentary, “Who Killed Shireen?”, alleges to have uncovered the identity of the Israeli soldier who shot and killed veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in May 2022. The film, produced by Zeteo, identifies the alleged shooter as a 20-year-old soldier on his first combat tour in the occupied West Bank.
The documentary also claims that both the Israeli government and the Biden administration attempted to cover up the killing and prevent the soldier from being held accountable. Executive producer Dion Nissenbaum stated that the Biden administration initially concluded that the shooting was intentional but that this conclusion was later overruled internally.
The film includes interviews with former US and Israeli officials, soldiers, and journalists who knew Abu Akleh. Shireen’s brother, Anton Abu Akleh, praised the documentary, stating it would shed more light on his sister’s targeted killing.
While Israel initially blamed Palestinian fighters, they later acknowledged that their troops were responsible, calling it an “accident.” Despite a subsequent apology, Israel declined to launch a criminal investigation, a decision the US ultimately accepted.
The documentary’s release comes amid ongoing concerns about violence against journalists in the region. Reporters Without Borders reported that Israeli forces killed nearly 200 journalists in the first 18 months of the assault on Gaza, with at least 42 killed while working. “Who Killed Shireen?” aims to bring renewed attention to Abu Akleh’s death and the alleged cover-up, prompting calls for further investigation and accountability.
