**New Delhi, May 8, 2025** – The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) has strongly condemned the ongoing demolition of slums and informal settlements across Delhi, accusing the BJP-led central government of exploiting a 2019 National Green Tribunal order to displace working-class communities.
CPI(M) Delhi secretary Anurag Saxena stated that the evictions, carried out under the guise of “riverfront revitalisation” and “beautification drives,” are facilitating corporate interests over public welfare. He cited the recent demolitions of slums in Taimur Nagar and Bela Road as examples of this displacement, claiming that these actions are inhumane and violate the constitutional rights of the residents.
Saxena specifically highlighted the planned eviction of Madrasi Camp residents in south Delhi, emphasizing the party’s opposition to their relocation to Narela, a location nearly 50 km away. He argued that such a move would severely disrupt livelihoods and access to essential services.
The CPI(M) has demanded an immediate halt to all evictions and demolitions until each resident’s appeal is fairly heard and resolved. They advocate for in-situ rehabilitation, or relocation within a 5 km radius, aligning with the government’s “Jahan Jhuggi, Wahaan Makaan” (where there’s a slum, there’s a house) promise. The party further suggests that vacant DDA land be utilized for housing construction if suitable alternatives are unavailable.
