Thu May 08 15:45:42 UTC 2025: **Kerala Congress Appoints New Leader in Bid to Regain Political Momentum**
KANNUR, Kerala – May 8, 2025 – Sunny Joseph, a three-time legislator and former Kannur District Congress Committee president, has been appointed as the new president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). This move is seen as a strategic attempt by the Congress high command to revitalize the party’s flagging support base ahead of crucial local body elections later this year and the 2026 Assembly polls.
The Congress party, after suffering consecutive defeats in the 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections, hopes to leverage the perceived electoral advantage of a Christian-Nair leadership combination, historically successful for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). Mr. Joseph’s appointment, the first Christian KPCC president in 21 years, aims to regain support from Christian communities, particularly Syrian Catholics, who have increasingly shifted their allegiance to the BJP.
The selection of Mr. Joseph also involved navigating internal party politics, including appeasing outgoing president K. Sudhakaran and quelling rumors surrounding the potential nomination of Anto Antony, MP from Pathanamthitta. Mr. Joseph, known for his grassroots activism and developmental work, is also a member of the KPCC’s political affairs committee and currently chairs the Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee. His extensive experience in local governance and his instrumental role in the formation of the Iritty taluk are expected to bolster his leadership.
