DHARWAD, INDIA (May 8, 2025) – The 880th birth anniversary of Basavanna, the 12th-century social reformer, was celebrated with fervor at Karnatak University in Dharwad. Speakers emphasized Basavanna’s enduring relevance, highlighting his advocacy for social equality and his pioneering vision.

Prabhakar Kore, Chairman of the KLE Society, inaugurated the Basaveshwara Jayanti program, stating that Basavanna’s message transcends the Lingayat community, representing all sections of society. He stressed the need to further disseminate Basavanna’s teachings, particularly through translation of his Vachanas (proverbs) into other Indian languages.

Former Vice-Chancellor K.B. Gudasi highlighted the universal message embedded in Vachana literature, emphasizing the significance of Basavanna’s concept of Dasoha (community feeding) in fostering social harmony. He further noted the contemporary relevance of Basavanna’s teachings in addressing present-day social issues.

Sri Sharathchandra Swami of Kundur Mutt expressed concern over the commodification of Basavanna’s image, emphasizing his crucial role in establishing democratic principles through the Anubhava Mantapa.

The event also included a dance drama based on Basavanna’s Vachanas and the release of a book on Fa.Gu. Halakatti. The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Jayashree S., stressed the need for continued awareness about Basavanna’s fight against gender discrimination.
