VATICAN CITY – Ahead of the start of the Papal conclave, all cardinals ineligible to vote and other non-essential personnel were dismissed from the Sistine Chapel with the traditional Latin phrase, “Extra Omnes.” This marks the formal beginning of the highly secretive process to elect the next Pope. The phrase, meaning “All others outside,” ensures only those cardinals entitled to cast ballots remain to begin deliberations.
