Wed May 07 10:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Met Gala 2025 Celebrates Black Style with Record-Breaking Fundraising

**New York, NY** – The 2025 Met Gala, held in New York City, made history by raising a record-breaking $31 million for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year’s event, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” celebrated the history and evolution of Black style and dandyism, marking the first time in the Met’s history that a menswear exhibition has solely focused on Black identity and designers.

Co-chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour (with LeBron James as an honorary chair), the gala showcased a diverse range of tailored looks, from classic suits to more contemporary interpretations. The “Tailored for You” dress code encouraged attendees to explore the breadth of Black style throughout history.

Complex editor-in-chief Aria Hughes highlighted the significance of the event, noting the opportunity to showcase archival pieces from influential Black designers like Patrick Kelly and Willi Smith. She anticipated standout appearances from André 3000, whose diverse style was described as “incredibly rebellious and fun,” and Slick Rick, whose Bronx roots profoundly impacted hip-hop fashion. Hughes also predicted the prominence of Grace Wales Bonner’s designs, known for their exploration of Black male identity.

The exhibition, curated by Monica L. Miller, draws inspiration from her book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” tracing the evolution of Black dandyism from its origins in the trans-Atlantic slave trade to its current influence on global trends. The exhibition, opening May 10th, will explore how Black individuals have used fashion as a tool to assert identity and challenge power structures.

The Met Gala’s focus on Black style is not only a celebration of aesthetic achievements but also a powerful act of preservation and recognition, countering the erasure of Black history in fashion and providing Black designers with the same platform previously enjoyed primarily by their white counterparts. The event underscores the ongoing influence of Black identity in shaping global fashion trends.
