Wed May 07 05:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Akal Takht Jathedar Condemns Cross-Border Shelling, Calls for Peace After Sikh Lives Lost in Poonch
**Jammu, India** – The Acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, has strongly condemned the cross-border shelling in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, which resulted in the deaths of several Sikh community members and damage to a gurdwara. At least 10 civilians were killed and 40 injured in the shelling, which officials attribute to Pakistani retaliation for Indian military operations.
Among the victims were Bhai Amreek Singh, a kirtan singer; Bhai Amarjeet Singh, a soldier; Bhai Ranjit Singh, a shopkeeper; and Bibi Ruby Kaur. The shelling also damaged the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha.
Jathedar Gargaj described the attack as a “blow to humanity,” urging both India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions through diplomacy. “Both governments must act with wisdom, not weapons,” he stated, highlighting the suffering inflicted on border communities, including Hindus and Sikhs, since 1947.
He expressed grief over the loss of life, emphasizing that the victims, each contributing in their own way to society, did not deserve such a fate. He called for prayers for the deceased and strength for their families.
The Jathedar offered words of support and comfort to those in the affected border areas, urging them to find solace in faith and community. Hundreds of families have already fled Poonch for Jammu amid fears of further violence. The Jathedar’s condemnation underscores the humanitarian crisis unfolding and the urgent need for peace in the region.
